Acro NewsMarch has been a busy month for our Acrobats with 2 major events. Both Gymnastics in the Park, hosted by Salto Gymnastics, and 100% Acro at Acrobatic Studio were amazing successes. It was so great to see all of the new routines and performances, and everyone had a great time. At Salto, teams from Alberta, BC and Saskatchewan made their way to Sherwood Park to take place at their annual meet. We really look forward to next year's event; we know it will be a blast. Outside of Calgary, in Springbank at 100% Acro, our athletes prepared for 2024 ACRO Provincials which will also be hosted by our partners at Acrobatic Studio. The competition runs April 20-21 with registration closing on March 28 ($25 late fees in effect afterwards). Spectator tickets will be available soon. For more information about the event contact us at acro@abgym.ab.ca, and for logistics you can reach Peter Van Thiel at info@acrobaticstudio.com. Keep warm and dry, and we'll see you next month!

Game On!International Women's Day Reception
|
|
|
(from left to right) Allison Sandmeyer-Graves, Mayor Jyoti Gondek, Suzanna Tangen, Jasmine Mian, Jane Wachowich, and Destiny Whitney On March 8th our CEO, Robin McDougall, was invited to Game On!, a reception on International Womenโs Day which was hosted by Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek in partnership with WinSport and Tourism Calgary. This event brought together women and girls who are participating or working in the field of sport to celebrate accomplishments and recognize the importance of sport and play throughout our entire lives. Mayor Gondek moderated a fantastic discussion around removing barriers for girls to get involved in and remain interested in sport longer. The panel of exceptional women included Allison Sandmeyer-Graves (CEO of Canadian Women and Sport), Suzanna Tangen (Paralympic athlete and executive director of the Ultimate Para Sports Association), Jasmine Mian (Calgary city councillor and Olympic wrestler), Jane Wachowich (founder and executive director for the Youth Centres of Calgary), and Destiny Whitney (Class A LPGA member from Tsuut'ina Nation). The conversation touched on many areas, including: barriers for which to keep an eye out, ways to help mitigate obstacles, and the ongoing importance of working together to ensure that sport is available to all individuals, no matter gender, race, economical stature, or physical limitations. Opportunities like this, to continue meaningful conversation and make important connections, benefit our entire community!

AGF and the Provincial and Territorial Gymnastics Sports organizations across Canada are pleased to announce the launch of SafeSport Gym Education.
SafeSport Gym Education is a collection of gymnastics organizations from across the country who worked hard to create documentary-style videos to share what safe sport means from real people, completely unscripted from real athletes, real coaches and real parents.
This is a collection of moments, feelings, and stories to educate us all.
Visit SafeSportGymEducation.org to view videos for all ages and for all people involved in our sport, in both official languages. You will also find Activity Books, Colouring Pages, and fact sheets about each video!
Feel free to browse and share and stay safe, because Safe Sport is Everyone's Responsibility.
Contact us at info@abgym.ab.ca for more information.

A Word from Finance and Membership ๐ต๐ฐ๐ฒ It's a very busy time here at the AGF offices.
In addition to getting ready for next month's Provincial Championships, it's also budget time! The program managers have been squeezing in meetings with their committees and submitting proposals for the 2024-2025 season. Budget season is a lot of work, but it can also be kind of fun (in its own way.) ๐๐๐งฎ Each of our managers starts off with a calendar and tries to plan what the season will look like for their group. There may be training camps to set up, clinics and workshops to host, social media campaigns to design, and other special projects they would like to tackle. Furthermore, we have to determine if Alberta is going to be hosting any major competitions like Canadian Championships or Elite Canada and how that can be accomplished while providing our guests with the best possible hospitality. This can often require a lot of research and negotiation. When it comes to operations, I look at what is needed to keep AGF running and then seek out areas of potential savings. Moreover, I have an eye to the future and how upcoming economic forces could affect our plans. That has been especially crucial these days! All of this planning occurs with our members at the top of our minds. We want to keep fees as reasonable as possible. As a not-for-profit, our utmost goal is to remain committed to the Strategic Plan's four pillars and provide positive experiences to the gymnastics community. Yet, we also ensure that athletes and coaches are getting the best value for their dollars. The fees for the 2024-2025 season will be released at the end of this month so keep your eyes open! After that we will be finalizing our plans for next year, which I will then present to the Board of Directors. There is so much to do over these coming weeks but it'll all be well worth it in the end. I'll be at the Olympic Oval at Provincials. Click here for tickets. Feel free to come say hi! Have fun, everyone! ๐ต๐๐คธ๐

๐ฅ Getting to Know Your AGF Team! ๐ What is the biggest mess or mistake you have ever made in the kitchen? ๐งโ๐ณ๐ณ๐ด๐ฑ
|
|
Jacinda - BIG MISTAKE, LESSONS LEARNED: Caught a pan of oil on fire, threw it on the sink. I KNEW not to put water on a oil fire and it wasnโt my intention to do so. I just threw it in the sink for safe keeping away from the stove. Before I got a chance to it a single drop of water fell from the tap. WELL! Nearly lost my hair, flames to the roof! Be warned, a single drop from a leaky tap can cause a massive flame. LESSONS WERE LEARNED and the house still stands so, win win. ๐ Bobby - I like to experiment with cooking and most of the time Iโve been able to throw things together/salvage a meal, but there have been a few occasions where weโve put dinner in the compost and ordered a pizza! Haleigh - Once when I was making scones I accidentally added 4x the amount of flour needed when I was doubling the recipe ๐๐คฆโโ๏ธ๐ญ Had to completely start over! Mo - I may be a decent cook although that doesn't mean I am the cleanest. I would say the biggest messes I make come from bags of rice falling over onto the floor ๐
Robin - Definitely one time when baking cookies I hit the high speed on the mixer by accident and a cloud of flour/sugar engulfed me and the entire kitchen!
Craig - LOL I have a really bad habit of letting pots boil over while I go watch TV so I've gone through so many towels cleaning up countless soups and pastas!๐ฌโจ๏ธ๐ฑ Ooops!
Carolyn - I would say my biggest mistakes are the messes I make on the stove. Water boiling over is my specialtyโฆ drives my husband nuts!
Keevin - One time I was making french fries in the oven and forgot about them and went to sleep. I woke up to someone yelling my name and it was a fireman standing over my bed! Apparently, the fries had burned and my neighbours smelled it and called them and they broke down my door. There was no fire at all or enough smoke to set the detectors off! My landlord even tried to make me pay for the broken door!
Jacqueline - When we started to let the boys help out, our meals started getting a little interesting. Between them thinking they had the right ingredients and the correct measurements we had interesting tasting meals. We always ate what they made because we didnโt want them to stop cooking but we always gave some advice on what to do the next time they make the same dish! ๐งโ๐ณ๐ด Roland the Monkey - One time, I ate all my bananas before I could turn them into banana bread! ๐ฑ Now I always buy extra at the store ๐
