Hello Stephen, Welcome to a new year, a new look newsletter, and a new term at ElderCollege! Let's hope that this year brings about many positive changes; we could all use a little something to look forward to, that's for sure. Our Spring 2021 term will continue in the same format as Fall, and we've worked hard to develop an interesting selection of courses, mostly on Zoom to keep everyone safely distanced. Sadly, with the increased provincial restrictions, we cannot offer any outdoor sessions in the first part of the term; we are optimistic that the curve will be flattened so we do have a few outdoor sessions planned for April/May. We are very proud of our exceptional Course Planning team, who have persevered through many challenges these past months, and we are delighted to be one of a very small handful of organizations in BC continuing to deliver education programs for lifelong learners. With our Zoom format of classes, anyone with an internet connection and device can participate -- if you have friends or family not located on the North Shore who want to join one of our sessions, we'd be delighted to welcome them. Please, spread the word. Attending one of our classes is a great way to fight social isolation, and to remain intellectually stimulated. We look forward to seeing you in class! ~Ed & Kate

A Fascinating Walk in the Woods From Zooming Around the World to discussing pressing news stories, fascinating books and history (and much more), North Shore ElderCollege participants were not sitting idle this fall – either engaging in courses via technology or getting out into “the wild”. Kudos to those willing to take on a new way of learning and to all those volunteers who have helped to make this happen.

I had the good fortune to be part of a “masked” and physically distanced group who visited the Lynn Valley Ecology Centre where we embarked on an educational adventure into the temperate rainforest led by knowledgeable park biologist, Michalle Martin. The Forest Quest class learned about the mysteries of life there - how there is strong evidence that trees communicate with each other, exchange nutrients, adjust their micro-climate and how they can protect other trees; that tiny organisms work hard to till and fertilize the earth and that despite the peskiness of some insects, they are also our cherished allies. Did you know that while a human would suffer a concussion with a G-force of 60-100 g’s, a wood pecker pecks with a force of 1200-1400 g’s?! The Lynn Valley Tree was once the tallest known coastal Douglas fir in the world at a measured height of 415 feet until, sadly, it met its demise in 1902 by loggers of the day. All this and more in our own backyard! The walk concluded with an excellent discussion about what we’d seen and a close up view of forest life via a special projector. Thank you to Rita Marshall for organizing this event, to the informative and entertaining presenters, and to all participants. It was a beautiful walk well worth taking! ~Midge
