Nomination Categories and Criteria
Male Wrestler of the Year
Awarded to an athlete that has shown achievement, commitment and dedication to their sport and celebrate their sporting achievements on either a: local, provincial, national and/or international stage
Female Wrestler of the Year
Awarded to an athlete that has shown achievement, commitment and dedication to their sport and celebrate their sporting achievements on either a: local, provincial, national and/or international stage
Coach of the Year
This award will be made to a coach who:
- Is a positive leader for the team before, during, and after competition. He or she is also a positive role model for the members of the team.
- Made an outstanding contribution to the development of wrestling for athletes of any ability
- Has supported the development of athletes or teams and has significantly increased the wrestling opportunities available and participation levels within their community.
- Has ensured that athletes with emerging talent have made an impact at local, provincial, national or international level.
Volunteer of the Year
This award will be made to a volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to their club and/or our organization, in recognition of their commitment over the past 12 months.
Team of the Year
The Team of the Year award is awarded annually to the club which has made the greatest overall contribution to Manitoba Amateur Wrestling Association.
Criteria may include:
- Range and level of activity (e.g. activities catering for beginners through to experienced wrestlers, organizing opportunities for athletes to develop and participate in camps & competitions.)
- Achievements both on and off the mat will be taken into consideration.
- The Club has created a welcoming and approachable environment for all their members.
- Levels of engagement (e.g. social media, newsletters, emails)
- Diversity of participation
- Connection with the wider community (e.g. volunteering projects)
Most Improved Athlete
This award recognizes the athlete who demonstrated the greatest overall growth and development throughout the season.
Criteria may include:
- Technical improvement and skill development
- Competitive progress and match performance
- Work ethic, attendance, and commitment to training
- Coachability, attitude, and perseverance
- Leadership, sportsmanship, and contribution to team culture
This award is not based solely on medals or wins, but on the athlete who showed the most significant personal improvement over the course of the season.
Spirit of Wrestling: Sportsmanship Award
This award recognizes the athlete who consistently demonstrates respect, integrity, and positive character both on and off the mat.
Criteria may include:
- Respect toward coaches, officials, opponents, and teammates
- Positive attitude in training and competition
- Leadership through example and encouragement of others
- Humility in victory and composure in defeat
- Fair play, honesty, and professionalism
- Contribution to a positive team and wrestling community culture
This award recognizes an athlete who represents the values and spirit of wrestling at the highest level.
