Introduction
The Heritage Committee of the Bridgeland-Riverside Community Association is working on a project to “tell the story” of the former Calgary General Hospital. We are planning a Commemorative Plaza and your feedback will help shape the design and features of this community space.
The survey closes January 25, 2026. As our thanks, everyone who participates will be entered into a draw to win a $10 gift card for a local Bridgeland business (Lukes, Made by Marcus, etc).
Background
For 88 years, the Calgary General Hospital stood on the land that is now Murdoch Park. From 1910 to 1998, it grew from 160 beds to nearly 1,000 and offered many outpatient services. Known as “The General,” it served Calgary and Southern Alberta with leading-edge care until its closure and demolition in 1998. The site has since become part of the vibrant Bridgeland-Riverside community we know today.
About the Commemorative Plaza
Planned features include:
- A year-round, accessible outdoor museum with interpretive plaques, QR codes, and digital storytelling.
- Upgrades to the northwest corner of Murdoch Park, including more seating, improved lighting, new vegetation, and potential public art or gardens.
- A gazebo-style structure offering a safe space for gathering, music, and reflection.
Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey, your name will be entered into a draw for a Bridgeland gift card.
