Settlement Services in the Bow Valley (SSBV) started November 2011 and has provided direct service to over 3000 individuals and families. We also provide ongoing support to schools, agencies, and employers. We are always looking to improve our services.
We know the success of immigrant students is the result of all parties involved: students, families, school staff, and settlement support. Our funder, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires us to evaluate our services and the impact we have had. This is an important part of our funding agreement, which has been extended until 2028.
We provide the following in-school support:
- Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS)
- Schooling in Canada parent orientations
- Meetings with clients to prepare before their family arrives
- School registration & orientation
- Parent information sessions
- Cultural awareness sessions for school staff
- After School Program focusing on friendships, school culture, active participation, wildlife safety, nutrition and healthy living etc.
- Leadership Program for Grades 5-6 at BES
- Youth Skill Building Program for Grades 8-12 at BCHS
- Newcomers Orientation Welcome (NOW) Program - new students orientated by peer mentors
- Student engagement projects (film projects, student storybook)
- Ongoing student, family, and school staff support
