Gymnastics Canada offers both current and retired Canadian Senior National Team athletes the opportunity to apply for a Coach Evaluation Challenge. Instead of taking the required NCCP courses, applicants can be approved to advance directly to an NCCP evaluation.

By effectively demonstrating their coaching competencies through this process, Senior National Team athletes can attain NCCP certification.

OUR COMMITMENT TO SAFE SPORT

Gymnastics Canada prioritizes the well-being of all participants and embraces a holistic approach to safety that includes policies, education, and a commitment to a secure, supportive environment.

We are dedicated to ensuring our community has effective screening practices in place and access to training in Safe Sport.

In turn, we ask all applicants to kindly review the following information carefully. It details the Evaluation Challenge process, including both the requirements and expectations.

Senior National Team athletes should only proceed with their application and payment once they have the necessary documentation.

STAGE ONE: APPLICATION

Senior National Team athletes must submit the following to Gymnastics Canada as part of their application:

  1. A non-refundable $133.00 application fee.
  2. Your contact information: name, email, phone and address.
  3. Your current coaching position.
  4. A letter from your current club in Canada. This should include a statement of support along with details of your coaching position, such as the level(s) of athletes you are currently coaching.
  5. A cover letter and an up-to-date résumé. Your résumé must include:
    1. Your educational background.
    2. A brief outline of your National Team involvement (e.g., dates, profile).
    3. A description of your coaching experience.
    4. A list of the NCCP courses you have completed (if applicable).
    5. Any other relevant information.
  6. A Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS) from your local detachment in Canada, issued within the last year. VSS checks conducted for organizations outside of gymnastics will not be accepted, in accordance with the Criminal Record Act. The organization listed must be a recognized gymnastics body (i.e., Gymnastics Canada, your provincial/territorial gymnastics organization, or your gymnastics club).

For their application to be considered, Senior National Team athletes must also complete the following training modules:

  • NCCP Make Ethical Decisions (MED) Online Evaluation
  • NCCP Emergency Action Plan
  • NCCP Making Head Way in Sport
  • Safe Sport Training
  • Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders

An account on The Locker platform is required to complete the first 4 modules listed. Once a profile is created, the account holder will receive a unique NCCP number to manage their coach training and records.

As part of their application, Gymnastics Canada recommends that Senior National Team athletes complete the Gymnastics Foundations Theory course through their provincial/territorial gymnastics organization (P/TO). This course is comprised of two modules: Planning a Practice and Make Ethical Decisions. Once completed, the MED Online Evaluation will be accessible at no cost, with unlimited attempts to pass.

STAGE TWO: REVIEW PROCESS

Once an application has been submitted, Gymnastics Canada will review the documentation provided. A minimum of four weeks is required to complete the review process. Should any questions arise regarding the application or if additional documentation is needed, Gymnastics Canada will contact both the applicant and their club directly.

Upon approval of the application, both the applicant and their club will receive written notification from Gymnastics Canada confirming the level of NCCP evaluation they are eligible to challenge.

Senior National Team athletes can be approved to challenge either the Gymnastics Foundations Evaluation OR the Competition 1 Evaluation, depending on the level of athletes they are currently coaching.

The review process is completed on a case-by-case basis; some consideration may be given to special cases.

STAGE THREE: EVALUATION

Gymnastics Canada will provide the applicant with an evaluation package that corresponds with the NCCP level they are eligible to challenge. The evaluation process is two-fold: the applicant must first complete a coaching portfolio and then undergo an observation of their coaching competencies during a gymnastics lesson/training.

Gymnastics Canada will assign an NCCP Trained Coach Evaluator to review the applicant's portfolio, observe their lesson/training, and offer feedback.

If all requirements and expectations are met, the Evaluator will inform both the applicant and Gymnastics Canada that the Evaluation Challenge is successfully completed. The applicant will then be granted NCCP Certification, which will be visible on their Locker transcript.
