Gymnastics Canada welcomes international coaches who are working at a member-affiliated club to apply for an Evaluation Challenge. This process offers coaches the opportunity to have their existing qualification(s) recognized in Canada's National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP).

Instead of taking the required NCCP courses, coaches can be approved to advance directly to an NCCP evaluation. By effectively demonstrating their coaching competencies through this process, coaches can earn an equivalent certification under the NCCP.

OUR COMMITMENT TO SAFE SPORT

Gymnastics Canada prioritizes the well-being of all participants and embraces a holistic approach to safety that includes policies, education, and a commitment to a secure, supportive environment.

We are dedicated to ensuring our community has effective screening practices in place and access to training in Safe Sport.

In turn, we ask all coaches applying for an Evaluation Challenge to kindly review the following information carefully. It details the Evaluation Challenge process, including both the requirements and expectations.

Coaches should only proceed with their application and payment once they have the necessary documentation.

STAGE ONE: APPLICATION

Coaches must submit the following to Gymnastics Canada as part of their application:

  1. A non-refundable $133.00 application fee.
  2. Your contact information: name, email, phone and address.
  3. Your current coaching position.
  4. A letter from your current club in Canada. This should include a statement of support along with details of your coaching position, such as the level(s) of athletes you are currently coaching.
  5. An up-to-date résumé.
  6. Evidence of your official coaching qualifications. This may include university transcripts or official coaching certificates/accreditations.
  7. Letter(s) of recommendation from your previous National Gymnastics Federation(s). The requirements and a letter template can be found here.
  8. A Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS) from your local detachment in Canada, issued within the last year. VSS checks conducted for organizations outside of gymnastics will not be accepted, in accordance with the Criminal Record Act. The organization listed must be a recognized gymnastics body (i.e., Gymnastics Canada, your provincial/territorial gymnastics organization, or your gymnastics club).
  9. Coaches who have not resided in Canada for at least five (5) years must also obtain the equivalent of a VSS from any country where they have spent 183 days (6 months) or more within the last five (5) years. If you are experiencing difficulty in obtaining this documentation, please contact coaching@gymcan.org.
  10. Any other relevant information (e.g., FIG Brevet card, special honours received, etc.).

Please note that all submitted documentation must be officially translated into English or French by a certified interpreter. Both the original and translated copies of the documents must be provided.

For their application to be considered, coaches must also complete the following training modules:

  • Coaching in Canada
  • Safe Sport Training
  • NCCP Making Head Way in Sport
  • NCCP Make Ethical Decisions (MED) Online Evaluation
  • Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders

Coaches are required to create an account on The Locker platform to complete the first 4 modules listed. Once a coach creates an account, they will receive a unique NCCP number to manage their coach training and records in Canada.

STAGE TWO: REVIEW PROCESS

Once an application has been submitted, Gymnastics Canada will review the documentation provided. A minimum of four weeks is required to complete the review process. Should any questions arise regarding the application or if additional documentation is needed, Gymnastics Canada will contact both the coach and their club directly.

Upon approval of the application, both the coach and their club will receive written notification from Gymnastics Canada confirming the level of NCCP evaluation they are eligible to challenge.

The review process is completed on a case-by-case basis; some consideration may be given to special cases.

STAGE THREE: EVALUATION

Gymnastics Canada will connect the coach with their provincial/territorial gymnastics organization (P/TO) to complete the last stage of the Evaluation Challenge.

The P/TO will provide the coach with an evaluation package that corresponds with the NCCP level they are eligible to challenge. The evaluation process is two-fold: the coach must first complete a coaching portfolio and then undergo an observation of their coaching competencies during a gymnastics lesson/training.

The P/TO will assign an NCCP Trained Coach Evaluator to review the coach's portfolio, observe their lesson/training, and offer feedback. Payment of an evaluation fee will be in accordance with the P/TO's policies.

If all requirements and expectations are met, the Evaluator will inform both the coach and their P/TO that the Evaluation Challenge is successfully completed. The coach will then receive an equivalent certification under Canada's NCCP, which will be visible on their Locker transcript.
