The Firing Pin

The course fee of $275 covers all necessities, including firearm rental, ammunition, protective gear, targets, and lunch on both days.

Due to the recent Concealed Carry Improvement Act initiated by Governor Hochul, new pistol permit applicants in New York must complete a 16-hour training course, and 2 hours of live-fire as mandated by the NYDCJS. Our training spans over a weekend, 9 hours each day, and concludes with a range session on Sunday. Attendance on both days and passing the written exam are essential for course credit. The fee includes all materials and lunch, with the understanding that it is non-refundable and must be paid in advance for registration.

The course is tailored for new pistol permit seekers and is led by seasoned NRA and USCCA-certified instructors. You do not need to take this course if you already hold an NYS pistol permit. Applicants must not be a prohibited person in regards to firearm ownership (I.E., you cannot be a felon, be convicted of domestic violence, etc.)

The curriculum encompasses firearm safety, maintenance, legal knowledge, and practical skills. Failure to pass the written test or demonstrate safe firearm handling will result in not passing the course. Students are required to bring a sturdy belt for holster training.

Our dynamic classroom environment includes regular breaks and the flexibility to move about. For a comprehensive overview of requirements, visit www.troopers.ny.gov. The course includes the NRA basic pistol course, which, upon completion, provides a certificate applicable for additional training or permits.

Classes run from 9 AM to 6 PM with an on-site lunch provided by The Firing Pin, LLC. Dietary restrictions may require you to bring your own lunch. During lunch, instructors will continue with a light presentation to cover the material fully.

Handguns in .22 caliber and corresponding ammunition for specific training segments will be provided without extra costs.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate for their New York pistol permit application and an NRA First Steps pistol completion certificate. Prospective students should be prepared for an intensive learning experience and are encouraged to have all queries addressed before signing up.

Conduct Policy

To ensure a safe and respectful environment for all participants, we reserve the right to remove anyone from class at any time for any reason. This includes, but is not limited to:

• Unsafe behavior

• Poor attitude

• Detection of substances (e.g., alcohol, marijuana)

Any individual removed from class will not be granted a refund or store credit.

The smell of marijuana or alcohol—regardless of use—is grounds for immediate removal. If you arrive smelling like marijuana, even if you haven’t used it, you will be asked to leave and will not receive a refund or credit.

Photo and Video Release

By participating in our classes or events, you acknowledge and agree that photos and videos may be taken during the course of the event for promotional, marketing, or educational purposes.

By attending, you grant us full permission to use any images or recordings that include you, without compensation, in any and all media formats, including but not limited to social media, websites, and printed materials.

Class Cancellation Policy

If you sign up for a class and are unable to attend, you will receive a store credit that can be applied to any future class within the same calendar year.

County acceptance.

If you sign up for a class and your county does not have us approved, we unfortunately cannot assist you. We are approved in nearly all counties, but a few choose to limit the number of instructors on their lists (we are actively trying to change this unnecessary and arbitrary rule) . Currently, those counties include Cayuga and Onondaga. If you are from those counties, DO NOT REGISTER FOR OUR Class.
