RE: Additional Information on WAG Sask First Document
Dear WAG Clubs,
As a follow up to the Sask First document, please see the below memo from the GymSask WAG Program Staff.
Oct 8th, 2026
Sask First trials will be held on Sunday, November 15th at the Marian Gymnastics Club. Details can be found in the program document.
There will be a Sask First training camp for all Tier 1, 2, and 3 athletes in Saskatoon, tentatively scheduled for November 26th to 28th.
GYMNASTICS CANADA CATEGORIES
GymCan will be sending out a document outlining the competition regulations for the following categories:
- Aspire 1
- Aspire 2
- National Novice
- HP Novice
- HP Junior
- HP Senior
The judging for all the above categories is based on the World Gymnastics (formerly FIG) 2025-2028 Code of Points, which can be found HERE. Judging with the WG Code of Points is significantly more stringent than judging with the CCP Code of Points.
The WAG HP Coach has produced two documents to help coaches understand the new rules and to help guide them through the selection of which category to have their athletes compete in:
Eligibility of Athletes by Birth Year and Gymcan Regulations
Sample Routines for Aspire 1&2, Novice, HP Novice, Junior
- There are two parts:
- The first is which categories an athlete is eligible for based on their birth year.
- The second part, for this coming season, is based on an athlete’s current or projected pathway, therefore what category she should be competing for that pathway, regardless of eligibility.
To note, GymCan’s Women’s Program Committee has made a large range of birth years in both aspire and both novice categories. The age ranges will narrow next year and into the future. Please carefully consider which category your athletes compete in this season, keeping the above in mind. Also consider which pathway you feel your athletes will likely follow in the future: High Performance, National (WG code), CCP 10, CCP 9, CCP 8, CCP 7.
- Please also consider the following for each athlete:
- Physical Ability
- Mental Capacity
- Talent
- Work Ethic
- Willingness/ability to work through challenges
- Family Support
At this time, GymCan has not confirmed whether Aspire 2 and National Novice athletes will be competing at 2027 Canadian Championships. It is unlikely that Aspire 2 will be, and National Novice is a question. There is limited time for the competition and in 2026 there was no training for CCP athletes to allow for the four-day competition format to include two days of competition for National Open athletes. It has also not been confirmed whether the 2027 Western Canadian Championships will include Aspire 1, 2 or National Novice.
Please contact HP Coach, Christopher Baraniuk at wagcoach@gymsask.com with any questions about the Sask First Testing and Sask First Training Camp or the two category documents. All questions regarding Westerns, Canadians or GymCan WAG programs should be directed to Program Coordinator, Karly Hayes, at wag@gymsask.com.
Thank you,
Gymnastics Saskatchewan
