Try the Track

New to track cycling? Curious about what it’s like? Want to try it with a group of friends—or experience a little thrill? You’re exactly who this is for.

During this 60-minute coached introduction, you’ll tour the velodrome, learn how the track works, and be fitted for a rental bike. You’ll start slowly, stay low on the track, and move up only when you’re ready. No experience or special equipment is needed—your bike, helmet, and coach are included. You’ll leave with a taste of what makes track cycling so special and, hopefully, a big grin.

Loved your first ride? Your next step is the Beginner Pathway.

The Beginner Pathway

You’ve tried the track—now it’s time to learn the ropes. The Beginner Pathway, formerly known as Certification and Accreditation, provides the time, instruction, and practice you need to become confident and comfortable riding the velodrome.

Across four 90-minute sessions, you’ll start slowly, stay low on the track, and move up only when you’re ready. Each session builds on the previous one, developing your bike-handling skills, awareness, communication, and understanding of safe riding.

Sessions must be completed in order, but there’s no need to rush. You’re welcome to take breaks and progress at your own pace. Each session is limited to 16 riders with a minimum of two coaches, allowing time for clear instruction, individual feedback, and plenty of practice.

Once you’ve completed the Beginner Pathway, we’ll provide you with information about joining Beginner Structured Training or other riding options.

Youth Track School

The Alberta Velodrome Youth Track School is a fun, fast-paced, and confidence-building program for young riders ages 11–16. Riders can register for one or two training sessions per week over 12 weeks, with certified coaches leading each session.

Please choose the program level that best fits your rider.

Beginner / Intermediate

Ages: 11–16
Best for: Riders who are new to the track, newer to cycling, or continuing to build confidence and skills.

Youth Track School Beginner / Intermediate is designed for riders ages 11–16 who have some bike riding experience or are new to track cycling. This program helps riders build confidence, learn track skills, ride safely with others, and have fun in a coached environment.

Riders should already be able to ride a two-wheel bike confidently and continuously for at least 15 minutes. This helps keep the track safe and fun for everyone.

Schedule Options: Mondays & Wednesdays 5:00–6:30 PM
$432.00 includes a 10% discount for registering for both days

Monday OR Wednesday 5:00–6:30 PM  $240.00

Location: Alberta Velodrome – Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre

Equipment: Track bikes are provided. We strongly encourage cycling shoes and pedals. This can be discussed before or after the first session.

Multi-Sport

Ages: 11–16
Best for: Riders who are new to track cycling, active in other sports, or looking to use track cycling as cross-training to build strength, stamina, confidence, and bike skills

Saturday Multi-Sport is a 12-week program for youth riders who want to build bike skills, confidence, conditioning, and friendships in a fun, coached environment. This program follows the same skill progression as the Beginner / Intermediate Youth Track School, with a focus on helping riders become comfortable on the velodrome while using track cycling as a great cross-training opportunity for other sports. Riders will learn track skills, bike handling, pacing, and safe group riding while building fitness, coordination, balance, and confidence one step at a time. Not every child grows up in a cycling household, and that is okay. If your rider is active, curious, or looking for something new, this is a great place to start!

Schedule Options: Saturday  9:00–10:30 AM  $240.00

Location: Alberta Velodrome – Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre

Equipment: Track bikes are provided. We strongly encourage cycling shoes and pedals. This can be discussed before or after the first session.

Advanced

Ages: 13–16
Best for: Riders who have completed a previous 12-week Youth Track School and are ready for the next stage of development.

Youth Track School Advanced is designed for riders ages 13–16 who have completed a previous 12-week Youth Track School and are ready to build toward longer, more consistent training on the track. This program focuses on athlete development by introducing interval training, functional movement, and concentration during pacing efforts to help riders develop their own training mindset.

Riders will continue to have fun with friends while learning that improvement can mean many things — building confidence, developing skills, riding longer, feeling stronger, or preparing for competition when they are ready.

Participants should be comfortable riding the velodrome and ready for more responsibility in their development by using a training diary, heart rate monitor, and basic sport monitoring tools. This program supports the next stage of long-term athlete development and helps riders move from learning the track to training with greater consistency, awareness, and purpose.

Schedule Options: Mondays & Wednesdays 5:00–6:30 PM
$432.00  Includes a 10% discount for registering for both days
