Configure multi-item promo codes

Use a multi-item promo code when a discount depends on the number of eligible items in the same purchase. For example, offer 10% off every second eligible registration. Choose the eligible items and participant rules before deciding how the discount applies.

Before you begin

You need access to E-Commerce → Promo codes and the classes, products, packages or memberships that the offer covers. A cart with two items does not necessarily qualify: only items that meet the promo code's criteria count. Start with How promo codes work for general validity, eligibility and redemption rules.

1. Create the promotion

Open Promo codes, add a code and configure its name, discount and validity or usage limits. Open Multi-items (advanced) and set the Minimum number of items. For a promotion triggered by two eligible items, enter 2.

2. Choose where to apply the discount

The minimum controls when the offer qualifies; the application choice controls which qualifying items receive the discount.

  • Apply to all eligible items once the minimum is reached.
  • Apply only to items at or above the minimum position.
  • Apply only to each minimum group of items, such as every second eligible item when the minimum is 2.

Review the example displayed in the editor, including the prices, rather than assuming that the second item entered will always be the discounted item. Item type, participant grouping and eligibility affect the result.

3. Set participant and item-type rules

Under advanced options, Apply promo code rule by item type separates the rule by item type. Single participant requires the same participant to have the minimum eligible purchases. An existing Distinct participant option requires different participants and can support older family-discount configurations; it is not shown on every new code.

For a family promotion, review the dedicated family-discount setting. Its minimum counts people and its application controls differ from an ordinary multi-item code. Do not use the number of cart lines as a substitute for the number of people.

4. Restrict eligible purchases

In Applies to, select the relevant classes, products, packages or memberships and any other eligibility conditions. For a two-class offer, exclude merchandise if a T-shirt should not qualify as the second item. Review any date or schedule restrictions before saving.

5. Review combinations

Multiple eligible promotions do not guarantee that every discount will stack. Prevent multi-item promo codes from being combined changes how overlapping promotions are selected: Activity Messenger keeps the compatible promotion or combination offering the highest total discount on each item. Review the existing codes together and check the calculated result.

Example and verification

For 10% off every second eligible registration, use a minimum of 2 and the application choice for each minimum group. Compare carts with one, two, three and four eligible registrations. Also check one ineligible item, two different participants and a cart with another applicable promo code. Confirm the discounted items and final invoice total before sharing the offer. In the Microsite cart, a multi-item code must be entered in the Apply the coupon or promo code field, not on a reservation line; see How promo codes work.
